This pattern is for a modest, one-piece swim dress with built-in leggings and a zipper in the back, which makes putting the swim dress on and taking it off easy and convenient. This pattern gives step-by-step instructions on how to sew the zipper, and also has a simple trick that makes it easy even for beginners with only modest skills.

By making the swim dress all one piece, there is no danger of the top floating up from the leggings in water and exposing a bare midriff, no matter how wildly kids play in the pool, jump in, etc. This also eliminates the need for an elastic waist band on the leggings part. Most elastic typically gives out after moderate use due to the chlorine in pools. By not using elastic in the waist band, the lifespan of your swim dress will be greatly prolonged.

Materials needed:

1.5 (size 6) to 2 yards (size 8 and up) medium weight Lycra/spandex, 60" wide

1 zipper, 15" or longer

thread in matching color

This swim dress can be made on a regular sewing machine.

Does not require the use of a serger.

The pattern includes detailed step-by-step directions.

Basic sewing skills are required.

If you would like to mix and match fabrics, please count on needing approx. 1/2 yard of fabric for the skirt, 1/2 yard of fabric for the leggings, and 1 yard of fabric for the bodice. For instance, if you would like to have black lycra leggings under a print bodice and skirt, you would need to purchase 1/2 yard of black lycra, and 1.5 yard of the print.

When selecting fabrics, please look for the following to obtain best results:

- The fabric should have 4-way stretch.
- The fabric should not be too thin, i.e. the edges should not roll when the fabric is stretched, and the fabric should not feel 'slippery' when two or more layers are rubbed together.
- The fabric should not be too thick and heavy. Medium-weight Lycra is both easy to work with, and will offer the best performance in water.

All the fabrics offered on our website are hand-picked very carefully and meet these requirements.

I was a little intimidated at first, but the directions were really easy to follow. The dress turned out so well, it looks store bought! I am so impressed, I'm planning on making one for myself. (02 Jun 2016, 04:25)

I am not an avid sewer but was able to make this swim dress from start to finish in about 6 hours. It wasn't very difficult at all and I loved the pictures in the directions. That made it so much easier to understand the written directions. It covers my daughter amazingly and she looks so cute. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a modest swim dress pattern!!
